लगभग तीस वर्ष पूर्व कवि सम्मेलन में गीत की सर्वोच्चता स्थापित हुई थी। धीरे-धीरे मंच पर हास्य कविताओं ने जगह बना ली। इसके बाद मंच पर हास्य कविताओं की जगह चुटकुले स्थापित हो गए। लेकिन पिछले कुछ समय से एक बार फिर गीत ने मंच पर अपनी जगह बनानी शुरू कर दी है | देश के विभिन्न क्षेत्रों से कुछ अच्छे संगीतकार गीत लेकर मंच पर आये हैं | अच्छी बात यह है कि गीत आज भी उतने ही शिद्दत से सुना जा रहा है जितना तीस साल पहले सुना जाता था।
इस समय मंच पर जो नये कवि आये हैं उनमें एक नाम है स्वयं श्रीवास्तव का, जो गीत सुनाते हैं। और गीत को जिस मधुर स्वर और सरल शब्दों की आवश्यकता है, वह सारी quality स्वयं श्रीवास्तव में है।
