हरियाणा में हास्य की एक बड़ी गौरवशाली परम्परा है | जीवन की विसंगतियों में हास्य खोजना हरियाणवी समाज की पहचान है | जब कवि सम्मेलन वजूद में नहीं आया होगा तब भी हरियाणा के लोग जीवन की समस्याओं को हँसी में उड़ाने की कला जानते रहे होंगे | क्योंकि परम्पराएँ बहुत जल्दी न बनती हैं न मिटती हैं | हरियाणा के लोगों का हास्य के प्रति लगाव क्यों है इसके पीछे भी शायद एक ऐतिहासिक कारण हो सकता है |
हरियाणा की भूमि ने जितने भीषण युद्ध देखे हैं दुनिया की किसी और जगह पर शायद ही इतने युद्ध लड़े गए हैं | हरियाणा में लड़ी गई दर्जनों लड़ाइयाँ विश्व स्तर की थी | महाभारत से लेकर मुगलों के भारत पर आक्रमण तक और मराठों और मुगलों के बीच लड़े गए युद्ध जैसे अनगिनत लड़ाईया हैं जो हरियाणा की धरती पर लड़ी गई हैं | जिन लोगों ने इतने भीषण युद्ध देखे है उनेक लिए शोक का समय भी बड़ा लम्बा रहा होगा | शायद यही कारण है कि हरियाणा के लोगों ने हर विपरीत परिस्थिति में हँसना सीख लिया है |
यही सहज हास्य जब किसी हास्य कवि सम्मेलन के माइक से होता हुआ लोगों तक जाता है तो उसी सहजता के साथ लोगों को हंसाता भी है | मास्टर महेंद्र उसी हरियाणवी हास्य के प्रतिनिधि कवि हैं | अपने पंद्रह वर्षों की हास्य कवि सम्मेलन की यात्रा में मास्टर महेंद्र ने न सिर्फ हरियाणा बल्कि देश के विभिन्य हिस्सों में हरियाणवी हास्य की छटा बखेरी है | वह हरियाणवी हास्य को अपने अंदाज में देश के अन्य हिस्सों तक लेके गए हैं | आज सुरेंद्र शर्मा, अरुण जैमिनी, अनिल अग्रवंशी, जगवीर राठी, की हरियाणवी हास्य परम्परा में मास्टर महेन्दर सबसे ऊँची पायदान पर हैं |
